AI-Powered Cookie Classification in Osano

Osano provides AI-powered cookie classification to help you categorize cookies faster and more accurately within Cookie Consent. This feature leverages secure AI infrastructure to assist with vendor identification, purpose, and expiration classification, reducing the manual effort required for cookie identification.

How It Works

Each cookie found during a scan will show an AI suggestion, along with a confidence score: Low, Medium, or High. These suggestions are based on research conducted via AI models hosted on AWS and augmented by web research tooling.

To view AI suggestions:

  1. Navigate to your Cookie Consent settings.

  2. Click on an individual cookie.

  3. The AI Assistance modal will appear.

The modal includes:

  • A suggested category (e.g., Marketing, Analytics)

  • The associated vendor

  • Expected expiration

  • A confidence score

  • A summary of the AI's research and findings

You can choose to accept the suggestion, modify it, or classify the cookie manually.

*IMPORTANT: Osano's AI does not auto-classify your cookies. You must still review and save any classifications for them to apply.*

Confidence Scores Explained

Confidence scores are ratings that reflect how certain the AI is about its suggested classification. It’s based on the amount and quality of data the model found about the cookie—like vendor details, purpose, known behaviors, and public references. Osano's AI uses a mix of publicly available information as well as aggregate community sourced information (i.e. "80% of Osano users classify X as essential"). These are then translated into a confidence score.

  • High Confidence: Strong supporting evidence found both from the Osano community of users and in an overall web search; safe to accept in most cases.

  • Medium Confidence: Some evidence found, but manual confirmation is recommended.

  • Low Confidence: Minimal or conflicting information found; manual review is strongly encouraged.

*PRO TIP: Think of AI as a very helpful assistant, not a replacement for your own compliance review.*

Responsibility & Compliance

Osano's AI is designed to save time and surface useful information based on data accumulated from across the internet and enhanced by the Osano community. It does not, however, guarantee accuracy or legal compliance. Final responsibility for cookie classification and disclosure remains with you.

We recommend that a privacy or legal expert review classifications before publishing them. Think of AI as a smart assistant, not a human. Always double-check important decisions with a human expert.

Data Privacy & Architecture

  • All classification data is processed and stored securely in Osano's AWS infrastructure.

  • The AI models do not share any user-specific data.

FAQs

Q: How often are AI suggestions updated? A: Currently, AI suggestions are generated once when the cookie is first scanned. Automatic refreshes or rechecks are not in place, though the data as a whole is refreshed quarterly.

Q: Can I rely solely on the AI suggestion? A: No. AI is meant to assist, not replace human review. Always double-check classifications, especially for cookies related to sensitive data or compliance-critical use cases.

Q: What if the AI makes a mistake? A: You can override or change the classification at any time. Osano encourages customers to make adjustments where necessary.

Q: Will my classifications be shared or used to train the AI? A: No personally identifiable data or site-specific classifications are shared. Osano uses anonymized trends to improve classification suggestions for all users.

Q: Where do I see these suggestions? A: In Cookie Consent > Cookies > [Select Cookie] > AI Assistance Modal.
