Osano gives you control over how the Do Not Sell or Share (DNS/S) toggle appears and behaves in your consent experience. This article covers how to enable or disable the DNS/S category, set it on by default, and configure which consent categories respond to it.
Available on: Pro plan and above
The Enable Do Not Sell / Share toggle controls whether your US visitors see a DNS/S opt-out option in the consent drawer at all. If your organization does not sell or share personal data you can disable this toggle to remove it from your consent experience entirely.
By default, the toggle is on for all customers. Nothing changes in your existing setup unless you explicitly disable it.

Compliance note: Before disabling DNS/S, Osano will show a confirmation prompt reminding you of potential compliance implications under US state privacy laws (CCPA, CPRA, and others). Osano recommends reviewing this change with your legal counsel before proceeding.
Re-enabling DNS/S: If you later turn DNS/S back on, a re-consent event will be triggered. Your end users will be prompted to provide consent again on their next visit. You'll see an in-app warning before this takes effect.
In my.osano.com, open your Consent Manager configuration and navigate to Do Not Sell in the left sidebar.
Under Do Not Sell / Share Settings, use the Enable Do Not Sell / Share toggle to turn the feature on or off.
If disabling, review and confirm the compliance warning that appears before saving.
Publish your configuration. Changes take effect on your visitors' next page load.
Audit trail: All changes to this setting are recorded in your Activity Log, so you have a full history of who changed what settings and when. Existing consent records are not retroactively modified; only consent collected after the change is affected.
The Enable Do Not Sell / Share by Default toggle lets you pre-activate the DNS/S opt-out for visitors in applicable US jurisdictions before any user interaction occurs.
This is an opt-in setting. It defaults to off, so no existing configurations change unless you enable it.

Banner Type | Toggle Enabled | Toggle Disabled |
|---|---|---|
Banner 1 (Implied consent) | DNS/S defaults to on (green) unless the user manually disables it | DNS/S defaults to off (grey) unless the user manually enables it |
Banner 3 (Explicit consent) | DNS/S defaults to on (green) before any consent is received | DNS/S defaults to off (grey) before consent. Reject All will activate the toggle. |
GPC signal active | DNS/S is always on (green) regardless of this setting if GPC is enabled on the configuration. GPC takes precedence. | |
Navigate to Do Not Sell in your CMP configuration.
Under Do Not Sell / Share Settings, enable the Enable Do Not Sell / Share by Default toggle.
Publish your configuration. The updated default state takes effect on visitors' next page load.
You can control which consent categories are automatically disabled when a visitor activates the DNS/S opt-out. By default, only Targeted Advertising is affected. You can extend DNS/S opt-out behavior to Analytics and Personalization as well.
These settings are found in the How categories respond to Do Not Sell / Share section of the Do Not Sell settings page.
Category | Configurable? | Default | Behavior |
|---|---|---|---|
Analytics | Yes | Ignores DNS/S | Opt in to make Analytics respond to DNS/S opt-out |
Targeted Advertising | Yes | Respects DNS/S | Opt in to make Targeted Advertising respond to DNS/S opt-out |
Personalization | Yes | Ignores DNS/S | Opt in to make Personalization respond to DNS/S opt-out |
Essential | No | Always on | Never affected by DNS/S. Always enabled for visitors. |
At least one category must always be selected. If you attempt to deselect all eligible categories, the interface will show an error.
✓ DNS/S opted in (manual or GPC/DNT signal): All Admin-selected categories are disabled and their toggles are locked in the end-user consent drawer. Visitors cannot re-enable them without turning off GPC/DNT, or if those are disabled, manually disabling the DNS/S toggle.
✓ DNS/S not yet activated: The Admin-selected categories are disabled by default before consent, but their toggles remain unlocked. Visitors can still choose to enable them manually.
NOTE: Changes to category configuration do not trigger a re-consent prompt. Records update on the visitor's next visit. If a category is added to DNS/S scope, its consent is set to false and the toggle is locked. If a category is removed from DNS/S scope, its toggle is unlocked but left in the off position.
Navigate to Do Not Sell in your CMP configuration.
Scroll to How categories respond to Do Not Sell / Share.
Toggle Respects DNS/S or Ignores DNS/S for each applicable category. Targeted Advertising is always set to Respects DNS/S.
Publish your configuration. Category changes take effect on visitors' next page load.
Will disabling DNS/S affect my existing consent records?
No. Existing records are not retroactively modified. Only consent collected after you disable DNS/S will stop including the opt_out category.
What happens to GPC signals if I turn off DNS/S?
GPC signals continue to be respected. When DNS/S is disabled but GPC setting is active, then the Targeted Advertising toggle is read-only (locked in off position) when the user's browser is sending GPC signal.
Can I re-enable DNS/S after disabling it?
Yes. Re-enabling DNS/S will trigger a re-consent event for all end users, meaning they'll be prompted to re-provide consent on their next visit. You'll see an in-app warning before this takes effect.
Does changing the category configuration trigger a re-consent prompt?
No. Category configuration changes do not trigger re-consent. Updated behavior takes effect on the visitor's next visit.
Do these settings affect visitors outside the United States?
No. DNS/S settings only apply to visitors in the United States. International consent behavior and configurations are unaffected.
