Why is the Essential switch greyed out?
The Essential switch is greyed out because it cannot be interacted with. All Essential scripts and cookies will always run on the end-user's browser and the user cannot opt out of them. As such, the toggle is greyed out to visually indicate its locked nature.
Why is my Targeted Advertising switch greyed out?
The Targeted Advertising switch may be greyed out due to one of the following reasons:
-
Do Not Sell is enabled:
If the Do Not Sell option is turned on, targeted advertising will be disabled as Osano prevents the sale or sharing of personal data with advertisers. -
Global Privacy Control (GPC) is enabled and detected:
When GPC is enabled and a GPC signal is detected, the Do Not Sell functionality is automatically activated. This disables targeted advertising to comply with user privacy preferences. -
Do Not Track (DNT) signal is enabled and detected:
When DNT is enabled, and the signal is detected, Osano will enable the Do Not Sell setting, thereby disabling targeted advertising.
Do Not Sell - How does it work?
Osano utilizes the IAB framework to signal downstream advertisers using an API built according to the IAB specification. The framework creates a global JavaScript event on the webpage that third-party advertisers listen to when determining the level of behavioral tracking and cookies to implement. Osano responds to consent requests and transmits consent preferences to advertisers, who are responsible for requesting consent through the IAB API.
When advertisers load, they access the webpage and cookies, and major ad networks have “receiver capabilities” built into their ad pixels. The Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information" switch in Osano's Cookie Preferences Drawer controls this process.
-
DNT Signals: If an end-user sends a DNT signal (via browser or browser extension), Osano listens for this signal and records an "Opt_Out" in the Consent Record, disabling targeted advertising. The Do Not Sell toggle is disabled, and the Marketing category is automatically set to "Deny."
-
GPC Signals: If an end-user sends a GPC signal, Osano also listens for this signal and records an "Opt_Out" in the Consent Record. Similar to DNT, the Do Not Sell toggle and Marketing category are disabled.
To test these scenarios, turn on GPC or DNT in your browser, clear your cookies and cache, and refresh the webpage with Osano installed. You’ll notice that the Targeted Advertising switch remains greyed out as a result of the detected privacy signals. When turned OFF, this automatic behavior will not be seen, and Targeted Advertising will remain unlocked unless the user explicitly toggles the Do Not Sell experience.
